Activist magazine Desde el Margen has featured an article on The Uprising and has asked me to write a reflection piece to introduce the film. Check out the English version of my contribution. “Two years ago I made a decision. I wanted to express my unapologetic voice in service of the decolonial struggle. As a musician I was used to using my voice. But I always felt the constraints of navigating white spaces as a woman of color when it comes to this topic. I was born and raised The Netherlands, where I currently live, as a daughter of Indo-Caribbean parents, Suriname (a former colony of The Netherlands) to be specific. Growing up as a minority in the west, I always had to make white people feel comfortable to get my message across. It meant I had to limit myself in expressing my authentic thoughts. Freedom of expression is a privilege of the colonizer.”Activistenmagazine Desde el Margen heeft een artikel geschreven over The Uprising en heeft mij gevraagd een reflectiestuk te schrijven om de film te introduceren. Bekijk de Nederlandse versie van mijn bijdrage. “Twee jaar geleden nam ik een beslissing. Ik wilde mijn ‘unapologetic’ stem uiten in dienst van de dekoloniale strijd. Als muzikant was ik gewend mijn stem te gebruiken. Maar ik heb altijd de beperkingen gevoeld van het navigeren door witte ruimtes als een vrouw van kleur als het gaat om dit onderwerp. Ik ben geboren en getogen in Nederland, waar ik momenteel woon, als dochter van Indo-Caribische ouders, Suriname (een voormalige kolonie van Nederland) om precies te zijn. Toen ik als minderheid in het westen opgroeide, moest ik altijd zorgen dat witte mensen zich op hun gemak voelden om mijn boodschap over te brengen. Het betekende dat ik mezelf moest beperken in het uiten van mijn authentieke gedachten. Vrijheid van meningsuiting is een voorrecht van de kolonisator.”
