3 stages of racism
Even though racism is based on the idea of race, the ideology of racism, ideas of superiority and inferiority, isn’t solely based race. Racism has had different markers to make people inferior throughout history. In battling racism it’s important to understand this historical evolution of racism, because it helps to identify and challenge racist narratives in the present. Sometimes these narratives are based on implicit ideas of superiority/inferiority. Recognizing the different markers of superiority/inferiority enables us to make them explicit. This activity encourages you to relate your daily experiences of racism to institutional racism and connect historical developments to present day legacies.

Think of a situation in which you encountered racism and discuss in a post which stage of racism you think it is related to. Share your reflections based on the following questions:
- What did the oppressor say or do to make you inferior?
- Was the idea of inferiority explicit or implicit?
- Was the idea of inferiority based on religion, biology or culture?
3 fasen van racisme
Ook al is racisme gebaseerd op het idee van ras, de ideologie van racisme, ideeën van superioriteit en inferioriteit, is niet alleen gebaseerd op ras. Racisme heeft door de geschiedenis heen verschillende kenmerken gehad om mensen minderwaardig te maken. Bij het bestrijden van racisme is het belangrijk om deze historische ontwikkeling van racisme te begrijpen, omdat het helpt om racistische ideeën in het heden te herkennen en uit te dagen. Soms zijn deze verhalen gebaseerd op impliciete beelden van superioriteit / inferioriteit. Door de verschillende kenmerken van superioriteit / inferioriteit te identificeren, kunnen we ze expliciet maken. Deze activiteit moedigt je aan om jouw dagelijkse ervaringen met racisme te verbinden aan institutioneel racisme en het verband te zien tussen gebeurtenissen uit het verleden en het heden.

Denk aan een situatie waarin je racisme bent tegengekomen en bespreek in een post met welke fase van racisme de situatie volgens jou is verbonden. Deel jouw reflecties op basis van de volgende vragen:
- Wat zei of deed de onderdrukker om jou minderwaardig te maken?
- Was het idee van minderwaardigheid expliciet of impliciet?
- Was het idee van minderwaardigheid gebaseerd op religie, biologie of cultuur?
