3 years ago I wrote a song about an unsung heroine from my community. She was the leader of the resistance in Suriname during an uprising in 1884. Ever since I encountered her story I felt people needed to know about her contribution to an important part of history. I got involved with the committee Tetary Must Rise and campaigned to raise money for a statue to commemorate Janey Tetary, a warrior of the resistance. On September 24th, exactly 133 years after the day she stood up for justice, I witnessed the revealing of her statue in Suriname. It was a historic and powerful moment. I’m so grateful we’ve been able to accomplish this statue, now Tetary will become part of our collective memory. If you ever visit Suriname, go to Grote Combéweg in Paramaribo.
